Welcome the Southwestern Jefferson Co School Corporation 3rd annual Summer Reading group.
This summer we will be discussing: The Connected Educator: Learning and Leading in a Digital Age by Sheryl Nussbaum-Beach and Lani Ritter Hall
Discussion of the book will begin the week of June 10th.
Before we get started, use this blog to introduce yourself to the group Let us know what you teach and what you expect from this group. Since our book is about being "connected", share with us about your PLN (Personal Learning Network). If you "tweet" or Facebook professionally...share your info so that everyone can follow you. (If you did not understand the last sentence..don't worry...you will be the end of the summer:) If you have any specific interests tell us about those too.
You should go ahead and either order or download your book now so that we are ready to start on June 10th.
If you know anyone who would like to join our group, please feel free to invite them to join. (They don't have to be Southwestern folks...everyone is welcome...as long as they join us before the week of June 10th).
Please note...we won't have any weeks off this summer. Past summers have shown that folks want to work through the entire book before school starts. I will be sending out a specific schedule via email, but we will start discussing Chapter one on June 10th.

Hi SW Reading Group! I enjoyed my first day of summer break today. As many of you may know I teach HS math. Next year I will be teaching AP Calc, Pre-Calculus, Trig, Prob&Stats, Algebra II, and math lab. My teaching schedule always keeps me very busy. This past year I tried a "flipped" classroom for my AP Calc and Pre-Calc. I know I will continue the flipped model this next year in AP Calc but I'll have to meet my other students before I decide on the others. My current PLN consists of some online learning communitites. I joined Twitter last year, but I never use it. I find that I don't have time to look at all the e-mail and posts I get from my communities. I hope this summer I can learn a way to better utilize these tools.
ReplyDeleteHi all
ReplyDeleteI got this email today and thought I would share. You might want to do the webinar next Tuesday to learn more about Twitter Chats. I like to do Twitter Chats to focus on new skills.
Thank you for participating in one or more of our 21st Century Learning Lab webinars this school year. I wanted to let you know that we will have a wide variety of professional development opportunities this summer. Beginning next week, we will offer webinars every Tuesday (excluding the week of July 4th) and twice weekly Twitter chats covering a variety of topics. Next week’s webinar will be on how to participate in a Twitter chat. If you have never participated in a Twitter chat, have just started in the chats, or have some experience but would like to hear from others participating in Twitter chats, please join us on Tuesday at 10am Eastern. Click here to register for the webinar and get the details on all of the summer webinars and Twitter chats here. Also next week, our Summer eLearning Book Group takes off and this summer we are reading Classroom Habitudes: Teaching Habits and Attitudes for 21st Century Learning by Angela Maiers. If you would like to get out of the house for some PD, we can connect you to an eLearning Conference near home or in any of seventeen spots around the state! All of these opportunities offer you professional growth points and the chance to learn your way! Join us!

I teach French 1-4 and English 11. I am currently wrapping up (as a student) an online course on blended and online learning. I have found a lot of new ideas for using technology in the classroom, and this week's module is about PLNs. I am still fairly old-fashioned in my networks - I attend conferences and share info informally with colleagues face-to-face.
ReplyDeleteAs for Twitter and Facebook, I do not follow specific professional communities, but I do follow French-oriented news and culture sites. I receive education and culture newsletters from the French Cultural Services of the French Embassy/Consulates in the US. My Twitter (used sparingly to date) is @nkaltenb. I (occasionally) retweet French news items, but hope to utilize Twitter more in the future for the classroom. I am currently exploring Facebook as a classroom tool while keeping my personal FB account private. I also receive newsletters via email from the AATF (French teachers assoc.).
I hope to continue exploring ways to be more connected in the classroom and on a professional level.
Hi all. I realized that I haven't posted my introduction yet. As you know, I am the Middle and High School Media Specialist here at Southwestern. In addition to my love of Young Adult Literature, I am constantly trying to stay on top of technology. I try to learn anything I can about new technologies and to share these with my teachers anytime I find something useful. Just learning new things can be a full time job...so I have to be selective in my PLN. Right now, I follow several folks/groups on Twitter. I use FaceBook for personal things. I will attend several trainings this month to learn new ways connect and use technology, but I plan to take most of July off to decompress and READ. I look forward to learning about being connected educators with all of you.
ReplyDeleteHello, Reading Group! I have finally figured out how to comment on here! I teach 3rd grade and have yet to start my summer vacation. I'm currently teaching the IRead review class with the other 3rd grade teachers. I'm also in the middle of moving the contents of my classroom to another room down the hall! I'm trying very hard to keep up with all of the new technology, but at times I feel overwhelmed! I currently use technology to connect with others on SimpleK12 and The Learning Connection. I have set up a Facebook page for my classroom for the upcoming school year, but I'm still learning!
ReplyDeleteHi everyone! Ok I've tried this 5 times...lol. I've taught Emotionally Disabled students for 28 years and just finished my 4th at southwestern. I can honestly say I love my job! This class has been one of my best. They are a little quirky and I think that is why I am enjoying it so much. I currently use Facebook, twitter, learning connection and simplek12. I'm going to end for now as I am having iPad problems. Peace...
ReplyDeleteHello! I have taught fifth grade for ten of the fifteen years I have been at Southwestern. I love this age group. One reason being their willingness to try new things, this seems especially true when it comes to technology. I enjoy teaching and learning through a hands-on approach. I attend conferences and workshops whenever possible. I use Facebook on a personal level and would like to create a page for my class next year. I have begun pinning to an education board on Pinterest. I also follow several groups on Edmodo, as well as, create groups for my class. What I need most is time to create a systematic approach to technology in the classroom.
